Enschede, January 12, 2017 – Encapson BV, a Dutch company developing echogenic coatings for medical devices announced today that it will start the industrial production of Sono-Coated biopsy needles. Having recently obtained ISO 13485:2016 certification the frontrunner in echogenic coatings is now gearing up production in its new clean manufacturing area.
Sono-Coat™ is based on a coating matrix of acoustically reflective microspheres that enhance ultrasound reflection, independent of the angle of the medical device. Unlike standard medical devices that are hard to see on an ultrasound, Sono-Coated™ catheters and needles appear bright on the screen. Sono-Coat™ technology also enables precise targeting of objects in deeper tissue structures (e.g. liver and kidney biopsies). Sono-Coat™ improves the functionality of ultrasound-guided medical devices and supports the physician in performing precise, safe and error-free procedures.
As front-runner in echogenic coatings, Encapson has defined a new standard for the ultrasound visibility of minimally invasive procedures. In a comparative study, 60 endoscopists and interventional radiologists performed a blind review of the ultrasound visibility of 10 echogenic biopsy needles (laser-etched, dimpled, sand-blasted and Sono-Coated™). The Sono-Coat™ needle performed significantly better (p<0.01) than currently marketed needles and was ranked number 1 in ultrasound visibility. The results have been published in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (GIE – PMID: 26873530).
For the large-scale production of Sono-Coat needles, Encapson had built a cutting edge automated dip coating production unit for the contract manufacturing of the first Sono-Coat™ biopsy needle. Minister of Economic Affairs H. Kamp supporting innovative SME’s visited the factory during the final testing stages. We work closely together with medtech industry, clinicians and research institutes on novel applications that will add significant clinical value in the field of e.g. regional anesthesia, RF/RM/Cryo ablation, performing biopsies and specialty catheters. Our goal is to develop state of the art echogenic medical devices for precision guided surgery.
