Encapson prepares market introduction of Sono-Coat

Encapson prepares market introduction of Sono-Coat™, an innovative coating to enhance the visibility of ultrasound-guided needles and catheters

Enschede, June 8th, 2015 – Encapson BV, a Dutch medical device coating company based in Enschede is ready to introduce its novel product Sono-Coat™ to the market. Sono-Coat™ is an echogenic coating to enhance the ultrasound visibility of medical devices. It is based on the use of acoustically reflective microspheres in a coating matrix. Sono-coated™ catheters and needles reflect more of the ultrasound signal back to the transducer probe providing unsurpassed ultrasound images.

Ultrasound has become the most widely used imaging technique in daily clinical practice. The ease of use of ultrasound-guided procedures (e.g. taking biopsies or inserting central venous catheters) and the absence of radiation risk made this technology the golden standard for assisting physicians in accurately placing catheters and needles. In spite of the many benefits ultrasound-guided procedures face a major challenge. It is often very difficult to visualize catheters as they are made of non-reflective plastics and even metal objects such as biopsy needles only reflect ultrasound waves when they are perpendicular to the transducer head. The microspheres in the Sono-Coat™ formulation overcome this issue as they provide excellent visibility independent of the angle between the ultrasound transducer and the sono-coated™ device.

The past year Encapson has coated a large number of samples for the medical device industry. The excellent results and positive feedback from its customers led the company to invest in setting up a brand new clean-room facility in Enschede. The clean-room will be equipped with state of the art dip-coating equipment that can be scaled up to allow large scale production of sono-coated™ medical devices.

To accelerate the transition of Encapson from the R&D phase into a market-driven coating company, the Supervisory Board appointed Heico Breek MD as CEO. Breek is a seasoned executive who acquired a wealth of business and management experience in pharma and biomedical industry. “I’m really pleased to join this successful team, who developed a series of highly echogenic coatings” says Heico Breek, “my main objective will be to establish Encapson as a preferred provider of echogenic coatings for the medical device industry”.

“I am very excited about the positive customer feedback on Sono-Coat™ and the progress made by the Encapson team”
